The creation of this course, which is included in the Top 5 Australian and Top 50 World Courses, is the merit of the genius architect Alister MacKenzie.

In 1926 he came here and was impressed by the natural splendor and on the same evening he said, “that the field built here will take your breath away like no other in the world, except perhaps Cypress Point.“

Since then, New South Wales has invariably flowed golfers like pilgrims to a sacred place created by nature, framed by the Pacific Ocean and shaped by the hand of the great McKenzie.

In fairness, it should be added that another famous designer and architect Eric Apperly took part in the creation of this masterpiece, who was responsible for the creation of the bunkers and carried out general supervision over the course of work. Eighty years later, the holes are still the way Epperly and McKenzie planned them.

Immediately after its opening in 1928, Golf in Australia reported that the course now only needed time to reach the pinnacle of excellence. Since then, this place has really improved, and although it has not reached stellar heights, it is equally beautiful and incredible in its own way.

The field is bounded on three sides by water and has many of the characteristics of a true link, although not entirely pronounced: rugged terrain and lightning-fast greens require maximum concentration from the player, physically and mentally. The difficult second part immediately tests the player’s stamina and makes it clear that it will only get more difficult.

This course offers stunning views and a series of magnificent holes built around the valleys and over the hills that lead to the coast. It is believed that golf originated on these seashores.

Here, the wind is the dominant factor, and therefore each hole is played in its own way and conditionally changes its difficulty rating from its direction.

Nevertheless, Epperly did not put forward his ideas, admitting that the course was not his brainchild, but several holes still became his creations no less worthy than all the others. The most famous of them is the fourth par3, the best of the short holes in the Sydney area, and the eighth par5, which is essentially a combination of the 7th and 8th holes made by McKenzie.

Holes 5 through 7 are considered the best in New South Wales. Let’s note the fifth par 5: you have to play blindly, over the hill. If the north wind is blowing, then you are in luck and provided you have a good command of the driver and wages, you will quickly get to the green; but if it is southern, there is a chance that you will reach the goal by playing wood more than once.
